Sculpture: Function for the Eyes

Throughout all the seasons of my life, connection with nature has been vital to my creativity and identity. The following pieces display this direct correlation.

These cocoons are coil built. They express literally what the cocoon's role is in nature: a protective shell that allows for development.  Theses pieces are about metamorphosis, growing and becoming. The cocoons are made from clay and are attached to wood after they are glazed and fired.

I have always been a collector of objects found outside. Over time I amassed a small congregation of rocks, feathers and interesting bits of my native woods. I am drawn to the small scale, intricate details and to the stories these items tell.   They are sort of a tangible journal of where I have been and what I have seen  For this series, I pulled textures and features out of the objects. I created boxes or shelves inspired by the objects specifically for them. After fastening the objects into their custom homes, the whole piece was mounted on wood.
